Could ANYTHING kill Helen?

DRUDGE REPORT FLASH 2005

Thu Jul 28 2005 15:32:13 ET

Veteran wire reporter Helen Thomas is vowing to 'kill herself' if Dick Cheney announces he is running for president.

The newspaper HILL first reported the startling claim on Thursday.

MORE

"The day Dick Cheney is going to run for president, I'll kill myself," she told the HILL. "All we need is one more liar."

Thomas added, "I think he'd like to run, but it would be a sad day for the country if he does."

why, oh, why

hasn't anyone thought of this sooner? I may soon conduct an informal poll of people who might be interested in this brilliant idea.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!"

If you're vegan. Burgers on the mind lately, and though I am by no means a pioneer on the Oregon Trail finding this find for the first time, I'm glad I finally went. thanks to gothamist, susan, john, and a congenital love of burgers and bacon, I finally made myself seek out Burger Joint in midtown's Parker Meridien - 119 west 57th street.

Pseudo fancy hotel, but don't be deterred. Burger Joint's menu.

simple. unexpected. cheap. perfect. this is why people live here.

More Rove/Miller/Wilson/Plame/Double Super Secret Background/Bush/WMD reading, if you're into that...

Very few of the journalists rallying behind New York Times reporter Judith Miller seem thrilled about defending her, no matter how strongly they believe in shielding sources. While they may admire her guts in going to jail, their lack of enthusiasm for her case is understandable.

She leaves much to be desired as a martyr for the First Amendment. Based on both past performance and present circumstance, she actually symbolizes a terrible betrayal of the public trust by the national media. And whatever she and her employers think they’re achieving in defiance of the special counsel investigating the Valerie Wilson case, her conduct will inevitably diminish the reputation and power of the press.

we are now approaching...

The idea of travelling has always been very strange to me, in part because I don't do much of it myself, and in part because it figures into some of the most amazing books I've read and songs I've heard. I need to think and write more about this, obviously, but I just heard from Abby after several hours in the air, thousands of feet up, thousands of miles away. Distance is diminished, then erased.

Is it just me?

Or does the discredited pseudo-science of phrenology shed some light on the tendency of misguided conservatives to bear resemblance to one another?

Phrenology was a science of character divination, faculty psychology, theory of brain and what the 19th-century phrenologists called "the only true science of mind." Phrenology came from the theories of the idiosyncratic Viennese physician Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828). The basic tenets of Gall's system were:

1.The brain is the organ of the mind.

2. The mind is composed of multiple distinct, innate faculties.
3. Because they are distinct, each faculty must have a separate seat or "organ" in the brain.
4. The size of an organ, other things being equal, is a measure of its power.
5. The shape of the brain is determined by the development of the various organs.
6. As the skull takes its shape from the brain, the surface of the skull can be read as an accurate index of psychological aptitudes and tendencies.

Or maybe it's just the hair...

I wonder what phone carrier the prison has...

Bernard J. Ebbers, the founder and former chief executive of WorldCom, was sentenced to 25 years in prison today for his role in an $11 billion accounting fraud that brought down the telecommunications company in 2002.

Warms your heart, doesn't it?

Fucking Idiots. Fucking Idiots. Fucking Idiots. Link above to the text below....

Fox On London Attacksby Chris Bowers

Brit Hume thinks it's time to invest:

I mean, my first thought when I heard -- just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, "Hmmm, time to buy."

Kilmeade thinks the attacks were a good thing for the Western world:
And that was the first time since 9-11 when they should know, and they do know now, that terrorism should be Number 1. But it's important for them all to be together. I think that works to our advantage, in the Western world's advantage, for people to experience something like this together, just 500 miles from where the attacks have happened.

The day before the attack, Fox's Gidson wrote:
So it would have been a treat, actually, to watch the French dealing with the problem of their own homegrown Islamist terrorists living in France already.

Which is why he wrote yesterday that it would be good if France was bombed:
The bombings in London: This is why I thought the Brits should let the French have the Olympics -- let somebody else be worried about guys with backpack bombs for a while.

Even though the attacks were targeted at Arab areas of London, finally Fox assures us that Arabs living in London are not real Londoners:

these people are, If necessary, prepared to spill Arab blood in addition to the blood of regular -- of nonarab people living in London.
------

All this begs the question: Can your head fall off from shaking it side to side in speechless disgust? These days I think I'm part of a study to find out.

kaboom

What follows is just about my favorite ending to just about my favorite book, so maybe I shouldn't have pointed out either of those things. That said, this weekend was another too short, too nice trip to a place where there are waves, and no alarms, and innumerable bad things to eat -- all for a holiday we had to return home to before it was over.

And it had me thinking about a lot of things, but as the worst bus ride ever slowly gave way to a skyline of manhattan and the obligatory pyrotechnic celebrations that follow each year, I found myself running this through my head, again and again and again:

They were letting off fireworks down at the waterfront, the sky exploding in grenades of colour. Whatever it is that pulls the pin, that hurls you past the boundaries of your own life into a brief and total beauty, even for a moment, it is enough.

Palm Beach Post - U.S. service men, women who have died in Iraq, Afghanistan

I haven't done as much thinking about what's going on with the war in the part of the world right now as I'd like to, Not in my own head, let alone here, but coming across this link above, I thought to put it up. It's a map that breaks out each of those killed thus far by state and hometown. More than two dozen from New York, NY, and from what I can tell, someone from every state in this conflicted country.

Nothing can begin to make it real for any of us, not unless you've been there, or have known a family member or close friend who has. On a daily basis, and on an exponentially larger scale, there are so many things both larger and worse, better and less obvious, that happen in the world that we take no notice of, either by choice, or by virtue of the simple fact that there's too much to take in, to process, and to have any sound intelligent or emotional reaction to. The map's a small argument in favor of trying to do so, though, and that's still something.
