fortunately more people read the site i found out about this on than my own, but for anyone stumbling across, i thought i'd throw this out there.
if you use amazon.com for anything and have a credit card on file with them, they have a page set up for easy, one-click donations to the relief efforts in southeast asia. all money goes directly to the american red cross for the purposes of helping out over there. they've pulled in over $4 million from that alone. only if you want...

I agree that we're being stingy and I think the Amazon donations put our own government to shame while showing American generosity at its best. Here's my post on the whole sordid affair:
